Harajuku

Harajuku – Solo Exhibit – Camille Pfister (Click for more information)

Camille Pfister is a full time artist residing in Paris, France.

Camille works in mixed paint mediums with a beautiful soft pastel palette and high attention to detail. Her original characters are inspired by Fashion, Dance and Patisserie amongst other things, borrowing from worldwide pop culture and of course the beautiful city which she lives in.

We first discovered Camille's work when Anita came across her little character Antonella several years back now and in recent years we have got to know Camille as a devoted artist with a growing family to fuel her wonderful imaginings. "Harajuku" puts that sweet little character Antonella in the spotlight as she hangs out with her Harajuku girlfriends in their finest attire.

We still have the softest spot for her and we hope you fall in love too.

Harajuku street style is centred on Takeshita Street in Japan and is a treasure trove of niche fashion which evolved into various elaborate looks and aesthetics. The fashions were documented beautifully in the Tokyo fanzine Fruits and subsequent books Fruits and Fresh Fruits by photographer Shoichi Aoki which captured the imagination of western teens and echoed the ideals of punk DIY style. As a reaction to the “little doll” cliche often bestowed on Asian girls and the “infantilisation” that comes with that, part of the trend was to take the doll like costumes and cutesy aesthetic to extremes, with the youth reclaiming and reinventing a subversion of the Lolita label for themselves.

A wonderful dress up parade with many offshoots such as Gothic, Rockabilly and more recently colourful Kawaii is still going strong in the Harajuku district, evolving year to year.

Camille has explored a wonderful range of looks in this collection from Wonderland to demure Country and Sweet Classic Lolita. Gothic and Aristocrat Lolita of course make an appearance and. Kawaii is represented with it's adorable animal bonnets. The Hime style is a very over the top Princess style, a nudge up from the pretty classic look on the ribbons and bows stakes. We have a hint of renegade styles in Sailor and Circus as well as the ghostly white Victorian look of Shiro and the all in black Kuro style.

Wa Lolita style features kimono or yukata style Lolita dresses. Typically, dresses are knee-length with the top half being kimono/yukata style with an obi and large sleeves, whilst the bottom half retains the Western puff skirt look. Decora or Deco takes the classic styles and is defined by the over the top layering of cute accessories, these maybe hair slides, badges, charms, bows and other embellishments.

We hope you enjoyed our walk through of the different styles and enjoy Camille's characters showing them off to maximum effect. It is very inspiring to see the research and detail that goes into these mini pop masterpieces.
We guarantee you will meet a girl to fit your personality here.
