Glastonbury Dragons
Far From Dull Ceramics (Helen Timperley) – Scotland
Medium: Glazed stoneware ceramic
Art size: 7cm x 7cm x 15cm tall each (2-off as a pair)
A pair of glazed stoneware ceramic “Glastonbury Dragons” which have enclosed ceramic beads so that they can be used as rattles/shakers.
Each May (Beltane) and October (Samhain) in Glastonbury the Red and White Dragons battle for the season – the battle represents the turning of the wheel of the year, winter to summer, summer to winter. There is a wild hunt with a drumming procession culminating in the crowning of the winning dragon; after which the dragons return to their secret lair under Glastonbury Tor, where they must remain until the next turning of the season – one dragon awake and on watch over the land; whilst the other sleeps until the next cycle.
