Description

Hecate
Jane Barnett – England, UK
Medium: Mixed media (recycled fabrics, beading, wool fibre, hand embroidery)
Size: 75 cm tall

The ‘Queen of the Witches’ wears her symbols and attributes.
Her bodice contains her black hounds and snakes, the scales of which are echoed in her sleeves.
Her legs are decorated with plants, skulls and keys to denote her knowledge of herblore, poisons and secret spells.
Her make-up denotes that she presides over crossroads, both metaphorically and literally, and she is veiled to indicate both her arcane knowledge and her association with death.
On her head she wears a lunar crown, and her veil is decorated with oak leaves, another attribute.
She is garbed in black with shimmering beads to represent the night, and her veiled eyes are made of stars.
