The Leviathan cross has existed for centuries, used in alchemy to represent the element sulphur. Sulphur is spiritually analogous to the human soul, and alchemical drawings often portray sulphur as the sun.

In the 1960’s, Anton Lavey adopted it as the emblem of the Church of Satan. It features a double cross, which symbolizes balance of self, atop an infinity symbol, which symbolizes the eternal universe. Lavey believed that this represented his ideology, that humans are their own centrum of balance and truth.
