Igraine was the mother of both Morgan Le Fay and Arthur. In that way she is a creatrix of sorts, bringing in both the feminine and masculine aspects of spirit. She is the mother of the king, and therefore the mother of her people. She is the preserver of her people and of the ancient traditions.
I chose a magpie to sit on her shoulder. Magpies are known as “The Cunning Prophet”. They are connected to occult knowledge, can open the door to the Spirit World, they are a jack of all trades and master of none, and a witch’s familiar. The Magpie is common in European folklore and superstition. I chose the magpie for Igraine to connect her to a deeper, prophetic wisdom. Yes she is the mother goddess aspect of the Ladies of the Lake, but also the preserver of the old knowledge that I think the mystical magpie represents.
